Long time no post

Back to work again after a veeeery relaxing weekend. Friday was just some drinks with friends at Zeerovers and to bed. Saturday I did lunch at Mom's kitchen and after that some grocery shopping and later met with friends at Chaos Cafe. It was a good night out with lots of 'eye candy' and good live music after midnight.
Sunday just slept in till late, since it was raining in the morning with thunder and some lightning. After that we had a BBQ at Randy's house, watched some TV and called it a day at 11 p.m.
So a quiet weekend indeed.
Not much work done at home, it was soo hot during the day that you cannot do anything outside. Hopefuly the weather gets better this week.

Fishing trip April 17

It's 5:00 when the alarm goes off, luckily I went to bed at around 11:00 the night before.
At 5:30 we leave Savaneta, me and Roli in his fishing boat 'Bernat'. The sea doesn't look as rough as the last time but when we get to 'Indianskop' near the refinery it gets pretty wild, and gets even rougher around the point called 'cabes'.
We fish again with the lead lines 'rosario' and another floating line with a 'duck'. I get 2 strikes which eat up half of the maulo bait and Roli is the first one getting a 'hafcor' (tuna), After that he brings in a small pikuda (barracuda), and I also get my first picuda followed by a second smaller one.
After this I do not get any strikes and Roli hooks a wowo di bollo (large eyed fish), after this we slowly drift back to Savaneta and near Indianskop a very large fish takes the floating line and it took some effort to bring in this 26 kilo Mulato (59 pound wahoo) into the boat, it easily took the width of the boat.
After this we drifted further down towards Savaneta and came in to tie up in front of Roli's house.
After cleaning and cutting the fish, and refreshing the throath with some cold Balashi's we stayed around the Zeerovers bar for some talking and drinking, and bragging about the nice catch on this trip.

Referee Competition April 9&10

This weekend took place the 2nd qualifying competition for the CCCAN championships in August. Saturday 6p.m. until 9:00 and Sunday 9:10 to 11:00 a.m.
It was a pretty smooth event that went very quickly but with a lot of disqualifications.
We will need to make a booklet with Fina rules because I have noticed some officials misinterpreting calls because of not knowing the rules, although all officials have received the training material not all are using it. If we make a booklet size rule book it will be easier for them to carry around at the meets.
Next event will be on May 13 to 15 which will the Aruban Championships.
I will have a workshop for new Timers for this event which will take place on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12.
More details to come.
Reminders: Lap counters, bells, Turf sheets need to be requested for this event.

Referee Carifta 2005, Curacao Mar 31-Apr 3

Curacao hosted the Carifta championships this year and it was held from March 31 to April 3.
2 officials from Aruba were present including myself and Mayens Tromp.
It was a very succesfull event for the Aruban officials since I refereed the first 3 days and while Mayens did Clerck of course for 3 and a half days.
There were a lot of problems in the organization part of the event which did cause for some frustration, especially on the awards ceremonies on the first day. By the second day this was resolved but still finished late because the awards for the relay events were handed out.

Mountainbiking on Saturday March 26

During the weekend of camping I decided to go mountainbiking alone on Saturday.
From the moment I started, I knew it was going to be difficult because of the heavy rains of the last months.
Not only were some paths heavilly washed out but the thorny bushes called 'Hubada' made it almost impossible to ride for long periods.
At one point it was impossible to continue because of the Hubada so I had to make the decision to turn back....as soon as a started back I knew I was in trouble because I could not recognize the paths because of heavy bush growth. I came to a clearing were there were 5 possible ways to get back on track, I was basically lost at that point....and did not know how to get out. I spent about 20 minutes trying out the possible paths and after no success decided just to go south through the bushes and find my way back to the path. That was pretty scary...walking back without knowing exactly were you were going. Luckily I found the path back and was able to ride it back

Fishing trip March19

Woke up 5:30 and got ready be at Roly's boat at 5:45. After loading the fishing gear we took off at 6:00 in total darkness. In 5 minutes the night started turning into day but the sea was pretty rough and the wind didn't help, since it blew the sea spray right into the boat. The 'BERNAT', a small 'arubian style' wooden fishing boat around 20 feet with a 40 horsepower engine.
While passing south of the Baby beach we were accompanied by a group of Dolphins which were swimming in the same direction as we were going....into the slowly rising sun. After some time we moved away from the group of about 15 small gray dolphins and started to prepare to drop the fishing lines, I got to take a 'rosario', which is a steel cable with lead weights attached to it every 2 feet. The lead weight is to make the line sink while the boat is still moving.
Around 8 a.m. I got my first strike on the line and managed to haul in (with assistance) a 'mulato' which is a wahoo of about 12 kilo's (around 20 pounds), and resulted to be my biggest catch, but not the biggest on this trip. Melvin magaged to get in a 15 kilo (30 pounds) wahoo, at the same time I caught my 4th one.

Referee Competition 18 Maart

The event started at around 7:00 and I (Ricky) was the referee of the meet. Although it was an event with lots of heats and also including Masters swimming it finished at 10:15 pm.
Before and after the meet I had a briefing with the officials, and after the meet I had a meeting with the other referee regarding his participation in International events, namely CARIFTA and CCCAN 2005.
It is decided that Orlando will be allowed to send an application to officiate at CCCAN as third official and only if Ricky and Nelson are chosen first.
All the Fina Referees and Starter need to sit together to go over the rules and update themselves in preparation for the CARIFTA championships in Curacao.
This need to be done either on Tuesday 29th or Wednesday 30th March.
Stickers with numbers need to be attached to starting blocks for next event.
Nicole has been given report of officials refreshment and timers course including names.

Swimming Timers Course March 16, 2005

Yesterday I gave a 2 hour course to 3 new Timers (6:45-9:00pm). Time was very short (again), so I'm evaluating making more than 1 session for the next workshop (maybe 2 weekday sessions of 2 hours each).
Must make a reminder to set up a course facilitator package for next workshops. I also need to make a sign to put up at the pool to get more volunteers to sign up for the next Timers workshop.
For next workshop I must get a decent remote controle for the video so I can pause and see if everyone got the message after each stroke.
Also must set up a timeline and take at least 1 hour for video presentation and q&a, remind to go over the strokes just before the video presentation.

Swimming officials workshop March 9, 2005

Today I had a first refreshment workshop for officials that already passed a timers course and have worked at some events before.
It was attended by about 12 persons and Referee Ricky Arends and Nelson Yarzagaray were facilitators.
2HOURS ARE NOT ENOUGH TIME!!! I need to remind myself constantly on this issue.
But it was well received by all participants, and hopefully I can do a follow-up on this soon again.

Competition 1st Class.CCCAN 2005

On March 5, 2005
Got at the pool at around 5:20pm and started to check if everything was in place for the event to start at 6:00 pm.
Because the copier ran out of toner the meet director could not make copies of the meet program for the officials and a copier had to be brought over to the computer room.
There was also a shortage of timekeepers so 4 people were pulled from the stands to assist the officials.
At 6:20 the officials marched out and took their place so the competition could start.
The competition finished at 8:45 pm and I debriefed until 9:00 pm.
The next morning I arrived at the pool at 8:45 am for the second session of the classifier for CCCAN championships which will be on August 1-8 in Sto.Domingo D.R.
The competition started at 9:30 am (exactly on time) and finished at 11:30am after which I had a brief meeting with the officials present.
I announced a refreshment course for Wednesday March 9 at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and a Timekeepers course on March 16, at 6:30pm to 9:00 pm.
Also reminded everyone to be present on March 17 at 6:00 for the Aruba Day competicion.
Thanked all and left pool at around 12:00.

Home improvement projects

Since I bought my own house on June 4, 2003 I have made countless improvements with still a few pending projects to complete.
I replaced all doors & locks, removed the interior ceiling and removed all electrical cabling.
A lot of trees were also cut in front of the house.
The apartment was first to be cleaned and prepared to move in, since the main house had to be rewired completely and the bathroom had to be redone completely.
Much time was spent on painting, cleaning, redoing before I could move into the apartment, but by August/September I could move in.
In the meanwhile work on the house was mostly electrical, which consisted of removing old cabling and removing copper pipes from inside the walls and from the ceiling, and digging new channels in the walls for additional electrical outlets. These were all dug with a Hilti machine over several weeks.

Welcome to Ricky's blogspot

Welcome to my Blogspot.
My name is Ricky Arends and living on the Island of Aruba.
I will try to have some posts of Interest to me on this spot about the Island of Aruba, about Swimming in Aruba and the Caribbean, about swimming officials on Aruba, Swimming organizations in the caribbean, and some information on FINA (Federation Internationale de Natacion).

Swimming Events on Aruba

Aruba's swimming competitions are organized during the year by the Swimming Federation AZB (Arubaanse Zwembond).
There are 3 teams that participate in these events which are; The Aruba Dolphins, Stingray swim team, and the Orca's.
There are more teams that give swim lessons but do not have competitive swimming in their program, there is also a government sponsored school swim program for kids in 3rd grade.
There is one (1) Synchronized swimming team; the Barracuda's, and actually there is no active Waterpolo team.
All events are sanctioned by the AZB and have to comply with the rules of the FINA (Federation Internationale de Natacion). To ensure this there has to be enough qualified officials to run these events, and Certified FINA referees and starters.
Aruba has 2 FINA Referees and 1 FINA Starter, this is where I come into the picture.
I am one the FINA Referees and am on List #12 of International Referees.
In other posts I will go into more detail of swimming in Aruba
